UoN VC crisis continues as student leaders back Prof. Mbeche

University of Nairobi student leaders have now called on the government to expedite the process of picking a new Vice Chancellor.

This comes after Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha revoked the appointment of Prof. Stephen Kiama and named Prof. Isaac Mbeche the acting VC.

Speaking to the press on Sunday morning, officials of the University of Nairobi Students’ Association (UNSA) maintained that they support the action taken by the CS, further expressing their support for Prof. Mbeche.

“Earlier there had been claims that there was mischief in the process of Vice Chancellor appointment…we want to say that this time round that matter be investigated as called upon by the Education CS,” said Byron Ochieng, main campus Secretary General.

UNSA Vice President Nyakundi Ian, on his part, said; “We cannot be having three Vice Chancellors in a year…that is a joke.”

The UoN Council early this year announced Prof. Stephen Gitahi Kiama as the institution’s new Vice Chancellor for a five-year term.

CS Magoha on Friday however dissolved the Julia Ojiambo-led council and revoked the appointment of Prof. Kiama pending consultation.

“Prof. Kiama will continue dispensing his duties as Deputy Vice Chancellor HUman Resource and Administration at the university,” said Magoha in a press release.
