UoN Vice Chancellor admits cartels selling drugs within varsity

University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor Prof. Peter Mbithi has admitted that cases of drug cartels at the institution are real as claimed by NACADA Chair John Mututho.

In an exclusive interview with Inooro TV, Mbithi says cases of drug abuse and drug peddling at the university have already been reported to the police but no action has been taken so far.

This comes just a day after the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett ordered Mututho to record a statement with police over his claims that senior officers are protecting drug cartels at the University of Nairobi.

In a statement to newsrooms on Thursday, Boinett said: “This is unacceptable and we take great exception to such reckless statements that are not based on facts but are clearly aimed at tarnishing the name of the police for reasons that are unknown to us.”

In his claim, the NACADA chairman fingered Central OCPD Paul Wanjama as one of the officers protecting the cartel that allegedly operates from the University’s Hall 9.

Mututho’s claims also come after security officers linked organized gangs to the violence that erupted over a disputed University of Nairobi SONU elections that saw the re-election of Babu Owino as the chairman.

Boinett said: “This is unacceptable and we take great exception to such reckless statements that are not based on facts but are clearly aimed at tarnishing the name of the police for reasons that are unknown to us.”

The NACADA chair has since said that he  is ready to record a statement.
