Latest update on Lake Nakuru chopper crash search mission

The search and recovery operation into the Lake Nakuru chopper crash which occurred on Thursday, October 21 is still ongoing, about two weeks since the incident occurred.

No other bodies have been recovered since those of Captain Apollo Malowa and Anthony Kipyego were recovered on October 23.

The National Disaster Operation Center (NDOC), in a statement released on Tuesday (October 31), said it is currently coordinating the multi-agency operation, amid the many challenges facing the teams conducting the mission.

“We still appeal for calm as the operation is ongoing. Safety for everyone is paramount as operation in the lake is delicate. Some of the challenges being encountered by Search and Rescue Teams are poor visibility in the lake due to dirty water, wide search area, presence of wild animals, and weather among others,” reads a statement from NDOC.

Mr Mwachi Pius Masai, the Deputy Director and Communication Officer National Disaster Management Unit, said that the operation, though delicate and challenging, will still be undertaken until all the three missing bodies are recovered.

The operation led by the Kenya Navy involves eight search teams including personnel from the National and Nakuru County Governments, Bomet County Government Disaster Management Unit and Divers, National Police Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Red Cross Society Divers, Mike Sonko Rescue Team Divers and Department of Geology.

The State Department for Transport through the Aircraft Accident Investigation Division (AAID) has since begun investigations into the cause of the crash.

The two out five recovered bodies  were ferried to Umash Funeral Home in Nairobi for toxicology investigations.
