Uproar after teacher impregnates 16-year-old girl

A family at Mang’unyuli Village in Sabatia Constituency, Vihiga County is demanding the arrest of a teacher who allegedly impregnated their 16-year-old daughter.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, the girl’s mother said she knew her daughter was pregnant earlier this month after she noticed her daughter was suffering from morning sickness.

Upon probing, the girl admitted to sleeping with the teacher on several occasions in the school kitchen before falling pregnant.

The family now wants the police to arrest the teacher for having canal knowledge of a minor, which is a crime.

This comes just one day after a secondary school principal in Laikipia West demanded the arrest of a couple for marrying off their daughter to a matatu driver for a Sh20,000 dowry.

According to Limunga Secondary School Principal Njoroge Mutoru, the girl was a dedicated student who showed promise in academics but was never given a chance to pursue her education.

“Chepkurui showed a lot of effort and commitment in her education and in sports while in school, action should be taken on both the parents and the alleged husband,” said the principal.

He narrated that Chepkurui failed to report to school when it opened this month, forcing him to inquire of her whereabouts. He later found out from members of the public that she had gotten married.

Mr Njoroge alerted the local chief of the matter but according to him no action has been taken on the parents or the alleged husband.

“It is disturbing to see young girls getting married instead of continuing with education. I believe the parents are to blame, action has to be taken,” he said.

Njoroge noted that cases of minors dropping from school and getting married have risen and Chepkurui’s case was the third one since November last year.

“Since the school was established in 2011, school girls dropping from school as a result of early pregnancy and early marriages has remained a major challenge,” he said, adding that career guidance and counseling was necessary in order to motivate minors to remain in school.
