Uproar as Embu County govt erects hundreds of billboards

Residents of Embu County have raised concern over the increased number of billboards and posters being erected by the county government that are believed to cost millions of tax payer’s money.

The residents are claiming that the county government is using the billboards as a way of looting public coffers, saying that one billboard on the tender document is stated to cost Sh100 000, which is higher than the market value.

Contractors led by John Mugo said they are being forced to erect two bill boards, one at the start of a project and one at the end of a project, adding that complains at the county government over the matter have gone unattended.

Mugo, one of the contractors, told Citizen Digital that every contractor is being forced to hand over Sh100,000 to the county government department of public communications for the erection of bill boards.

“It has become a very big cartel, we are not complaining against being told to erect bill boards, we are complaining about being forced to remit to the county government Sh100, 000 for the erection of bill boards whereas we can still do the same at a very low costs,” he said.

Embu businessman Vimal Chada said that they county governor should concentrate on offering services to Wananchi, saying that the money being used to erect bill boards can be used on other important development projects.

He noted that some of the billboards are very big that they are blocking roads, making them dangerous for motorists, adding that some have been erected on walking paths thus forcing pedestrians to walk on the main highway.

Chada said that leaders must understand that the public can see and understand their development projects and thus there is no need of erecting big billboards to explain what they have done.

However when contacted, Embu Governor Martin Wambora said that he is not done yet in erecting billboards to show the development projects he has done, adding that he is planning to erect 500 more billboards.

Wambora said that leaders from the national government have been taking credit for his development projects and thus the move to name every of his project for the public to know.
