US Department of State condemns murder of lawyer Willie Kimani, 2 others

The United States (US) Department of State has condemned murder of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client Eric Mwenda and driver Joseph Muiruri.

This comes a day after bodies of the three were found inside sacks and strangulation marks in River Athi in Ol Donyo Sabuk, metres from 14 falls in Machakos County.

In a statement issued through Spokesperson John Kirby, Secretary of State John Kerry expressed concern over the murder of the International Justice Mission lawyer and the other two individuals. Kerry’s office says the US department is closely monitoring investigations being carried out by Kenyan police.

This statement comes a day after three officers suspected to be behind the murders were arrested.

Meanwhile, the National Council of Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) has strongly condemned killing of innocent Kenyans, including the recent murder of Kimani, his client and their taxi driver.

In a statement to newsrooms, The Council’s Chairman Stephen Cheboi condemned such killings and called on police and other Government agencies to ensure safety and security of all Kenyans through vigilance. Cheboi also urged Kenyans to volunteer information to Police and other security authorities to help in dealing with criminal activities in the country.

The International Justice Mission (IJM) vowed to pursue all necessary legal measures to ensure those behind the killing of Kimani, his client and a taxi driver face justice.  These statements were echoed by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).
