US pledges Ksh 2.5B for Kenyas electoral process

The United States has pledged to support Kenya in its endeavour to hold a free and fair General Election in 2017.

Addressing the press at a Nairobi hotel on Monday, US Secretary of State John Kerry said they had held extensive discussions with President Uhuru Kenyatta on the need for the country to hold a free and credible election next year.

Kerry said that it is in the interest of Kenyans and the international community to put in place measures that would prevent a repeat of the 2017 post-election chaos.

“We are investing over 25 million dollars in order to support the electoral process. We want to strengthen your election operations and ensue you are able to carry out election in a free and transparent manner,” said Kerry.

He further noted that the United States does not support any party in the 2017 elections while remaining committal that support would be accorded to Kenya to ensure the polls are credible.

“It is really hard in this day’s global marketplace to have prosperity and security without good governance. That is why preparations for next year’s elections are important,” he said.

“It is imperative to note that the United States does not favour one party over another. We support a fair, accountable, transparent, orderly, credible and nonviolence election, and we will help Kenya achieve that.”

He called on political leaders to resolve any electoral disagreement through peaceful means, noting that Kenya should not witness a repeat of the 2007 post-election chaos.

“I am pleased to see progress being made in reforming the country’s electoral agency (IEBC) to ensure the next elections are acceptable by all parties.”

Kerry further praised Kenya for being a partner to the United States in matters trade and investment and wildlife conservation, saying he would further support efforts to ensure the elections are peaceful.
