Use money to add value to teaching and learning Matiangi

The Cabinet Secretary for Education Dr. Fred Matiang’i has criticized public schools that spend large sums of money on extravagant buildings that do not add value to the teaching and learning environment for students and teachers.

He said public schools that receive grants from government and fees from parents should use the monies to improve classrooms, dining halls, hostels and other structures that improve the learning environment for students instead of building impressive administration blocks.

Matiang’i made the remarks when he made an inspection tour of Kagumo High School in Nyeri.

The school is putting up an ultra-modern office administration block which the Principal, Lawrence Kiwara, said will also house an ICT centre.

“We should assist schools to expand dormitories, classrooms and other buildings students use for learning purposes,” Dr. Matiang’i noted, saying that this would guarantee the safety and health of students while in school.

He said the school with over 1,000 students had tiny buildings as students’ hostels, saying the school administration should think about expanding dormitories.

The CS said the Board of Management should give more priority to creating a learning environment that ensures students’ safety and health through repairs, building and expanding classrooms, hostels and dining halls.

Dr. Matiang’i said the administration should refurbish the hall used by students for various educational activities, saying the condition of the hall at the school is bad for students’ use.

According to the Director of Secondary and Tertiary Education, Kagumo High School received Ksh 40million to help it refurbish and expand teaching and learning facilities, following its elevation to National School status.

The Cabinet Secretary was accompanied by the Nyeri Country Director of Education Mr. Fredrick Kiilu and his Teachers Service Commission counterpart Ms Rita Wahome as well as Deputy Director of Education from the Headquarters Ms Anne Wanja.
