Varsity students threaten mass action over lecturers strike

University students have threatened to call for a countrywide mass action by mid this month if the government will not intervene in the ongoing lecturers’ strike.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Karatina University student leader Enock Nyerere said if the strike continues student leaders will be forced to rally up their colleagues to take an action.

The students lamented that they were forced to vacate the institution barely a month after reporting back.

This comes after the school, through the registrar of Academics Dr Wangari Gathuthi, announced the suspension of second semester activities and asked all students residing in the school halls of residence to clear and vacate the premises by Friday.

Communication on the reopening date, the university said, would be done once the university operations normalize.

According to Phobian Tore, an education science student in his fourth year at the university, his bid to get a job fast has been interrupted.

Tore further noted that third year students have largely been affected as they are supposed to be going for attachment according to the school’s guideline.

Medical students have also been affected by the ongoing doctors’ strike despite being required to conduct their practicals in hospitals that have not been operational for the last two months.
