Veteran politician warns against violence

Multiparty crusader and veteran politician Charles Rubia has asked Kenyans to practice genuine peace and harmonious co-existence with one another.

Addressing the County Assembly of Murang’a on Wednesday, Rubia said no leader can prosper without the support of the people.

He lamented that after the Constitution of Kenyan 2010 devolved power and resources to county governments, supremacy wars for county leadership have taken centre stage.

Rubia said the bickering and differences exhibited by some elected leaders may derail development and divide the country.

The former cabinet minister, who is also chairman of the Council of Eminent Persons, said Kenya has come long way and leaders should avoid sparking violence in the country.

Rubia, who was among the leaders who fought for multiparty democracy in the country, said peace was the only guarantee for sustainable freedom and development for the country.

He further regretted that close to a decade ago Kenya’s peace and sovereignty came under mortal threat from a near civil war situation after the disputed 2007 election, adding that he had chosen to remind Kenyans to treasure peace.

“I speak of peace at a time when we are headed for a General Election next year, peace is the single most important gift from God, which we often take for granted,” said Rubia.

He reiterated that the role of politics was to sell ideas and programmes to the electorate.

“Leaders do not have to form militias or youth groups to terrorise, heckle and shout down other leaders, that is primitive and uncouth and should be condemned strongly,” he added.

He noted that the country’s celebrated democracy and freedom was under threat due to conflict as families, clans and ethnic communities are rising up against each other.

The veteran politician warned that election time was a delicate period as the country’s stability is tested.
