Vetting of Chief Justice, deputy applicants kick off Monday

Interviews for the post of Chief Justice will kick off Monday, August 29 with six candidates set to battle it out for the country’s top Judiciary post.

However, the interviews might not take off as expected until the High Court delivers a ruling on a petition challenging the process used by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) in short listing candidates for the Chief justice, Deputy Chief Justice and Judge of Supreme Court positions.

Court of Appeal Judge Alnashir Visram, High Court Judge Msagha Mbogholi, Court of Appeal Judge Roselyn Nambuye and David Maraga, Supreme Court Judge Smokin Wanjala and advocate Nzamba Kitonga will square it out to fill Chief Justice post that was left vacant following the retirement of Dr Willy Mutunga over a month ago.

Judiciary Director of Communication, Naim Bilal, told Hot96 FM News that preparations for the interviews have been finalized.

Vetting of the six candidates will take six days. JSC will also vet 13 women who have been shortlisted for the Deputy Chief Justice position.

JSC had already asked the public to submit information that will be useful in their interviews concerning the applicants.

Deputy CJ and Judge of Supreme Court positions fell vacant in June following retirement of Kalpana Rawal and Philip Tunoi respectively.

The commission is supposed to submit three names to the President to appoint the CJ Deputy CJ.

Nairobi-based lawyer Danstan Omari says although most of the shortlisted candidates are qualified, some questionable issues may lock them out.
