VIDEO: How Kenya’s top teacher Peter Tabichi opened U.S. Congress
Award-winning teacher Peter Tabichi on Tuesday opened the U.S. Congress.
He recited the Franciscan prayer for peace at the Capitol in Washington D.C.
It reads as follows:
“Lord make me an instrument of your peace
Where there is hatred let me sow love
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith
Where there is despair, hope
Where there is darkness, light
And where there is sadness, joy
not so much seek to be consoled as to console
to be understood as to understand
To be loved as to love
For it is in giving that we receive
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned
And it’s in dying that we are born to eternal life
Amen.”
The 37-year-old Franciscan Brother noted that opening Congress indicates that the American Government recognizes his religion and achievements as a teacher.
A day earlier, he held a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump to talk about the importance of supporting education in Africa.

Tabichi won the 2019 Global Teacher Prize in March.
The Varkey Foundation awarded him $1 million (Ksh.100 million) for dedicating his life to helping others.
Brother Tabichi gives 80percent of his teaching salary to local community projects, including education, sustainable agriculture and peace-building.
When he returned to the country, President Uhuru Kenyatta hosted him at State House, Nairobi and pledged to donate Ksh.20million to Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School for the expansion of infrastructure.
A month later, Varkey Foundation appointed Tabichi as a champion for children in conflicts and crisis.
Former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown described him as an “inspiration”.
