Vihiga Governor suspends three county ministers

The Vihiga County Government has suspended three County Executive Committee (CEC) members over alleged embezzlement of Ksh.18 million.

Sports CEC Marita Agufana, Finance CEC Alfred Indeche and their Education counterpart Felisters Okumu have been forced to step aside following a directive issued by the county assembly.

Speaking to the press on Thursday, Vihiga County Deputy Governor Patrick Saisi said the county government had received letters from the three officials accepting to pave way for investigations into the allegations.

“For now we are not saying whether money was embezzled or not. All we’re saying is that let the county government conduct their investigations, we have nothing to hide,” said the Deputy Governor.

Governor Wilbur Ottichilo is expected to appoint temporary replacements for the three officials.

“Since we received these letters, the governor has not yet picked those who will be acting. You have to be patient, I’m sure something will be done in that regard,” said Saisi.

At the same time, Saisa said the county government was yet to receive formal communication from the county assembly directing the reinstatement of previously fired contract workers.

At least 800 casual workers and contract employees were affected after the county government in March this year halted their contracts in a move aimed at taming high wage bill.
