Vihiga Referral Hospital denies negligence claims in patients death

The Vihiga County Referral Hospital has dismissed reports claiming that an accident victim died at the facility as a result of negligence.

A video had been shared on social media showing the motorbike accident victim, Joy Annette Kabarika, allegedly being denied essential emergency services.

The clip was claimed to have been shot at the Vihiga County Referral Hospital, where Annette died on Monday, September 16.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the County Executive Committee in charge of Health Services Dr. Amos Kutwa dismissed the video saying it had been shot at a different hospital.

According to Dr. Kutwa, the late Annette was admitted at Vihiga County Referral Hospital on Saturday, September 14 and died on Monday, September 16 after her condition that was stabilizing suddenly changed.

“Annette was brought in on Saturday 14th September 2019 at 9pm by well-wishers from Digital Medical Centre in Chavakali, a victim of motorbike accident. X-Ray scans done on Annette revealed she had a fractured left thigh bone. She also had cuts that were stitched,” said Dr. Kutwa.

He added that X-ray scans were sound enough for a medical diagnostic conclusion thus a CT scan, was deemed not an emergency at that point.

“Therefore, the notion that Annette Kabarika was denied CT scan services because she could not raise Ksh.4,500 is misguided and inflammatory,” added Dr. Kutwa.

The county referral hospital extended their condolences to the family of the late Annette and has expressed willingness to have postmortem done to identify the cause of her death.
