Vision 2030 still on course despite COVID-19 adversities- Agency

With 10 years to go to the 2030 deadline, the secretariat charged with delivering vision 2030 flagship project insist that they are still on course despite the challenges that have been presented by COVID-19.

According to vision 2030 Director General Kenneth Mwige, however, goals set at the beginning of the medium term plan 3 , which comes to an end in 2022, may not be achieved .

“We have been derailed a bit with the events of the year, which has affected the whole world but the work we did previously , in MTP 1 and 2 still will ensure that we are on course ,” Mr. Mwige said.

He added that the government will focus on revamping the battered economy next year reducing the priority given to the secretariat .

On this, Mwige says that they will be focusing on signing more public – private partnerships as the government is only required to fund 30% of the projects under vision 2030.*

“There is no way that the government can fund the projects under the secretariat wholly …what we will be focusing on is bringing more PPPs on board to ensure we deliver the projects,” he added.

Mr. Mwige gave an update on the biggest project under the vision 2030 – The Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport corridor -LAPPSET – stating that the Lamu Port will start operating by October next year.

Road networks that will be used to evacuate cargo from the port like The Lamu-Witu-Garsen Road are more than half way done.

“The port will be delivered on the expected date . We had a few delays initially with compensation but now it’s all systems go as we finalise the second and third Berths of the port ,” Mr. Mwige said.

Kenneth Mwige was appointed as director general of vision 2030 in July of this year replacing Julius Muia who was appointed principal secretary at the national treasury.
