Voi residents hold demo, call for the release of land activist

Hundreds of residents from Mwakingali, Taita Taveta County today stormed Voi Police Station today calling for the release of their associate who was arrested on Saturday 17, 2016.

Initially, officers were in control of the dramatic throng but their effort fell short when the crowd swelled, overpowering them.

The residents said that their colleague was arrested for allegedly leading them reclaiming land that belonged to a Voi tycoon, Sahidin Dean.

The residents said that the land rightfully belonged to the community, adding that local leaders had not spoken against the alleged injustice – silence that they claimed was “bought”.

Mr Sahidin Dean was not available for comment, while the area OCPD refused to comment on the matter, saying that his sentiments could compromise the ongoing investigation.

The local leader was released from remand, even as Mwakingali residents vowed to continue clearing the piece of land.
