Wabukhala sworn in as EACC chair

Former Anglican Church of Kenya Archbishop Eliud Wabukhala has been sworn in as the head the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

Wabukhala was picked to replace Philip Kinisu, who left the ant-graft body amid overwhelming pressure over allegations of involvement in corruption.

Accepting the daunting role to lead the war against corruption in the country, Wabukhala promised to practice impartiality and called for concerted efforts by all stakeholders to eradicate graft.

“I strongly believe that that the war against corruption in this country can be won but requires multi-pronged strategies bringing together all sectors,” said Wabukhala.

Presiding over the swearing ceremony, Chief Justice David Maraga asked the new EACC chair to strengthen the investigative arm of the anti-graft body in order to ensure successful prosecution of graft cases.

“You will ensure that the investigations are provisionally done and cases that are brought before courts are well investigated and not those that are designed to fail,” said CJ Maraga.

Litigation of corruption cases in the country has been characterised by accusations and counter-accusations between the investigative agencies and the judiciary over incomprehensive investigations and shaky evidence.

The judiciary has been hugely blamed for letting go of mega corruption suspects and incarcerating minor ones.

Attorney General Githu Muigai pledged government support to the institution.

Kenyans of high hopes on the former clergyman to slay the corruption monster in the country after all his predecessors at Integrity Centre have either been hoarded out of office or left unceremoniously on accusations of shielding corruption moguls.

Speaking at a voters’ registration mobilisation tour in Webuye, Bungoma County Deputy President William Ruto suggested that the new EACC chair should take up the embezzlement of farmers’ funds at Nzoia Sugar Company as his first case.
