Waiguru criticized for ‘not compensating’ IDPs

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru has been criticized after she said that the government will not be compensating any more Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the 2007/08 post-election violence.

Former Saboti MP Davies Nakitare has said that the International Criminal Court (ICC) should intervene and have all the people displaced since the 1992 clashes compensated.

Nakitare also accused the national government of resettling fake IDPs who were allegedly displaced in the Rift Valley during the 2007 post-election chaos that saw at least 1,300 killed and more than 600,000 others displaced.

On Saturday, the government ruled out future compensation and allocation of land to victims of the 2007-2008 post-election violence.

Waiguru said the government had already settled genuine Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in transitional camps adding that those claiming to be IDPs now would not be compensated or given land.

The Devolution CS stated that the government was using the records of registered IDPs affected by the post polls chaos noting it would be difficult to ensure further compensation for more victims.

Waiguru said the government has already resettled over 8,000 victims who were affected by the post-election violence.

“I can assure Kenyans that we have resettled everyone who was in the government data. We also compensated them with between Ksh 10,000 and Ksh 25,000,” she said.
