Waiguru demands apology from MP Mohammed Ali over NYS scam

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has demanded for an apology from Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali for linking her to the recent Ksh.9 billion scandal at the National Youth Service (NYS).

On Tuesday, Ali alleged that investigators had deliberately left out some senior government officials, banks and business people in the ongoing probe into the recent NYS scam.

The former journalist named 10 individuals, among them Governor Waiguru, and 40 companies which he said ought to be investigated over the Ksh.9 billion scandal.

“Evidence has been brought to my attention that now points to the alleged involvement of other senior government officials, banks and business people whose names have been studiously avoided both by investigators and the media,” said Ali.

“These people and institutions, it would seem from the evidence I have been given, were involved in NYS1 (previous Ksh.791 million scandal), and may very well be involved in this second series of thefts from the National Youth Service.”

Accusing the Nyali MP of defamation, Waiguru, through her legal team, said Ali’s words “were meant and understood to mean that she is a common thief, embezzler of public funds, corrupt, flagrant law-breaker and unfit to hold public office.”

She therefore wants Ali to make a “written, unconditional and unreserved apology” within seven days failure to which she will seek redress in court.

In 2016, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission cleared Waiguru of any wrongdoing in the Ksh.791 million NYS scandal, saying there was no evidence linking her to the scam that occurred when she was Devolution Cabinet Secretary.
