Waiguru in new tact as battle for Kirinyaga Jubilee ticket enters home stretch

Like many other counties, Kirinyaga is a beehive of activities with political aspirants racing against time to gather the numbers ahead of Jubilee nominations set for April 21, 2017.

The governorship race, in particular has turned out to be a heated contest between former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru, the incumbent Joseph Ndathi, and Kirinyaga Central MP Gachoki Gitari.

In a bid to solidify her support and conquer new grounds, Waiguru has gone full throttle as the nomination day draws closer.

While the other aspirants have focused on Constituency visits, the former Cabinet Secretary has gone a step further with her Meet The People tour, targeting voters in the wards.

The segmentation of the county into smaller units has given Waiguru more ground to cover, while enabling a more personal interaction with the people of Kirinyaga.

This tactic has also enabled her to reach smaller groups of men, women and youth in the wards as she spells out her agenda for the people of Kirinyaga.

So far, Waiguru has visited all the wards in the four constituencies in Kirinyaga County (Mwea, Ndia, Kirinyaga Central and Gichugu, holding door-to-door meetings and addressing rallies.

Waiguru has resorted to personal interacting with the locals, holding discussions with youth and women groups and making public addresses.

The former CS has centred her campaign on development, promising to improve health care, agriculture, infrastructure, education, and security while also supporting women and youth initiatives and creating job opportunities for the locals.

In her rallies last week, Waiguru accused Governor Ndathi of letting the people of Kirinyaga down, noting that the poor state of roads and health sector in the constituency is a clear pointer on his apparent ineptitude.

If elected governor, Waiguru promised to oversee a turnaround in how county affairs are handled to ensure Kirinyaga is ranked highest in terms of development in the country.

The winner for the Jubilee governorship race will face off with other candidates from others parties including Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua for the county’s top job in August 8, 2017 elections.
