Waiguru intensifies campaigns in Kirinyaga as Jubilee nominations draw closer

Former Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru this week intensified her campaigns in Kirinyaga County as Jubilee nominations draw closer.

The former Cabinet Secretary traversed different wards in Mwea, Gichugu, Ndia constituencies in hunt for votes, promising to turn around the state of affairs in the county, if elected governor.

Waiguru bemoaned the underdevelopment that Kirinyaga County has faced under the governorship of the incumbent Joseph Ndathi saying the county deserves better.

“We, the people of Kirinyaga have really suffered under Ndathi who has shown no interest in developing the county and bettering the lives of the people,” she said.

“Kirinyaga lags behind other counties in terms of development with the locals facing the challenge of poor roads, dysfunctional health sector, and neglected agricultural sector, because of Ndathi’s mismanagement of county affairs.
We need change,” she asserted.

Waiguru said that the county has immense resources and fertile soil for agriculture noting that if well harnessed they could produce enough food not just for the locals but to also export to other parts of the country.

Under her leadership, Waiguru said, she would ensure the welfare of women and youth are well catered for, drawing from her experience and success story as Cabinet Secretary for Devolution.

“As Devolution CS, I initiated Youth Fund and Women Fund which helped to empower women and youth by helping them start self-help projects that changed their living standards for the better. I intend to do the same for the people of Kirinyaga.”

The Kirinyaga governorship aspirant urged her supporters to rally behind her and ensure she wins not just the Jubilee nominations but also the August 8 elections to allow her to implement her transformation agenda.

Waiguru will face off with Kirinyaga governor Joseph Ndathi among other aspirants for the Jubilee ticket on April 21, 2017.

With just two weeks to the nominations, Ndathi is yet to name his running mate, months after the resignation of his deputy governor Julius Njiiri.

Njiiri, who hails from the vote-rich Mwea Constituency, said he resigned from his position because of corruption in Ndathi’s government and mismanagement of county affairs.

Kirinyaga county’s Minister for Lands, Harry Mugo, also resigned almost four months ago, citing frustrations by Ndathi, accusing the governor of condoning corruption and land grabbing in his administration.

Ndathi was last month summoned by Jubilee party over claims that he orchestrated chaos that marred the party’s meeting aimed at picking election board members, allegations that he had denied.
