Waiguru joins DP Ruto, Mandago at inaugural Eldoret Marathon

Deputy President William Ruto was on Sunday flanked by Governors Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu), Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), as well as Soy MP Caleb Kositany at the inaugural Eldoret City Marathon held in Eldoret town.

The marathon, themed ‘Climate Action,’ is aimed at creating awareness on environmental conversation in the county.

Speaking at the function, DP Ruto praised the initiative, calling on Kenyans to work together to conserve the environment.

“The nobility of this idea cannot be overstated. This should be just the beginning of many more of such events,” said Ruto.

On her part, Governor Waiguru praised the organisers of the event while welcoming the participating athletes to Kirinyaga for the Mwea Marathon.

“As a country, we have a responsibility to ensure we conserve our environment for future generations. We have also begun on this same path in Kirinyaga by tree planting initiative that will see us plant 1 million trees in five years,” she said.

She further praised host governor Mandago and the organisers of the event for spearheading the initiative to sensitize the public on environmental conservation.

The 42 kilometre race saw top three winners walk away with Ksh.3 Million, Ksh.1.5 Million and Ksh.1 Million respectively.

Elkana Kibet Yego won the men’s race while the women’s race was won by Sharon Chemutai.

The Deputy President led the leaders in a tree planting exercise on the banks of River Sosiani in Eldoret Town after participating in the 5 Kilometer cooperate race the race.
