Waiguru rally disrupted by stone-hurling youth

Kirinyaga Governor candidate on a Jubilee Party ticket, Anne Waiguru, found herself in the midst of chaos Tuesday evening (July 25), when alleged supporters of her political rival, Martha Karua, allegedly stormed her (Waiguru’s) rally at Kibingo in Ndia, Kirinyaga Central.

Waiguru had finished addressing a campaign rally, when alleged supporters of Martha Karua began shouting that the ex-Devolution Cabinet Secretary (CS) was unwelcome at a Martha Karua and Gitari Gachoki stronghold.

A victim of the chaos, namely Moses Waweru, said Waiguru’s bodyguards swiftly swung into action and whisked her to safety, when police began shooting in the air to calm the chaos.

The goons reportedly stoned Waiguru’s campaign vehicle before taking off with the car key.

Waweru, 50, who sustained injuries during the chaos, was admitted at a private hospital in Embu County Tuesday evening.

Waweru says Waiguru’s bodyguards rescued him from the ugly mob. Police restored order shortly after arriving at scene.

Neither of the two gubernatorial candidates (Waiguru and Karua) has given an official statement over the chaos.

Waiguru will face off against NARC-Kenya’s Martha Karua and incumbent Governor Joseph Ndathi on August 8.
