Waiguru receives Kirinyaga leaders’ blessings
Kikuyu elders from the larger Kirinyaga County on Friday, September 16 coronated former Devolution Cabinet Secretary, Ann Waiguru, and bestowed her as a Kirinyaga leader.
The former CS underwent the Kikuyu traditional rite where she was dressed in a special cloth known as “Thitu” reserved for selected Kikuyu women leaders.
In an elaborate traditional ceremony held in Kutus town, the elders led by Benson Njege blessed Waiguru and declared their support in her quest for governorship seat.
Members of the Kikuyu Council of Elders, popularly known as Kĩama Kĩa Ma, conducted the ceremony attended by hundreds of her supporters.
The elders later anointed the former CS with castor oil and gave her the power to go out and hunt for votes in the entire county.
Speaking to the media, Waiguru said that she was elated by the elders’ action and termed the ceremony as very important as it will prepare her to face her opponents during the campaign period.
She noted that though the country has adopted modernity, the ceremony was very important since as a Kikuyu she must get blessings from her elders before starting the journey to hunt for votes.
“We had come to seek for blessings from our elders. It is good to go with blessings of the parents,” said Waiguru.
She dismissed her critics’ accusations that she is an urbanite and she does not understand problems facing the people of Kirinyaga County.
“My politics will be very different. I cannot do politics of insults and war. I will go to the grassroots and ask the women and youth for votes.”
Waiguru said that she is in touch with the grassroots leaders and people of Kirinyaga County and vowed to unseat the current Governor, Joseph Ndathi.
The elders revealed that they decided to bless Waiguru as a Kirinyaga leader after the current Governor let them down and failed to perform as per their expectations.
