Wajir assistant chief accused of rape to remain in custody until all witnesses testify
A Garissa court has remanded a Wajir assistant chief accused of rape until all civilian witnesses in the case testify.
The order was given after the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) made the application to have the suspect – Kalmoi Shale Ahmed – remain in custody.
The ODPP had transferred the matter from Wajir to Garissa to prevent witness’ interference.
The accused on Friday last week pleaded not guilty to charges of rape and wrongful distribution of obscene images. He also faced an alternative count of indecent act.
He denied the charges and applied to be released on bail which the State prosecutor opposed arguing that he could interfere with witnesses if released given his position.
