Wajir East MP Kassim freed on Ksh.50K bail after Gedi assault

Wajir East MP Rashid Kassim was on Friday been freed Ksh.50,000 cash bail after denying charges that he assaulted Fatuma Gedi, the area Woman Rep.

The MP had appeared before Milimani Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi.

where through his lawyers, pleaded for lenient bond terms after submitting that the accused was in a bad health condition.

“Hon. Rashid was forcefully uprooted from the hospital bed against the doctor’s orders and presented before the court,” lawyer Sam Nyabere told the court.

The MP claimed to have developed mental complications some hours to midnight and was rushed to Aga Khan hospital for a check-up.

Although the prosecution asked the court to consider the status of Rashid as an MP and the publicity of the case, the court ruled in favor of the defendant’s plea for bail.

“The main purpose of granting bail is to secure attendance. I have considered submissions by both sides and medical reports submitted. Putting into consideration the accused person status will be discriminatory, however, the court will consider this to determine his ability to afford set bond terms,” Magistrate Andayi ruled.

MP Rashid is said to have taken himself to Central Police Station on Friday but was denied bail and directed to Kileleshwa Police Station from where he was advised to appear in court.

The accused was on Friday granted Ksh.100,000 bond with an alternative of one surety or a cash bail of Ksh.50,000.

The case will be mentioned on June 28 and heard on August 6.
