Wajir Governor launches 5-year county economic plan

Wajir Governor Mohamed A. Mohamud has exuded confidence that the county’s socio-economic investments are on course for the next five years.

Speaking during the county’s public participation forum on the Second Generation Wajir County Integrated Development Plan, the governor says the plan presents a new paradigm shift in service delivery.

“This Plan is a primary document that outlines the consensus on programmes and projects in a particular County Government and its social contract with its stakeholders on its commitment towards implementation.” He said.

According to the governor, the policy document presents a paradigm shift with respect to both public participation and devolution of development planning anchored on existing National Government economic planning frameworks.

” Subsequently, Wajir County Government will use the findings from the review to inform the process of finalizing the preparation of its Second Generation County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP) 2018-2022.” said Governor Mohamud

The 5-year plan county planning framework is also expected to integrate economic, physical, social, environmental and spatial planning in a bid to inform the county’s Annual Development Plans (ADPs) and Annual Budgets in the Plan Period.

The county administration has in the meantime allocated 25 million shillings worth of community development projects to each of the 30 Wards in Wajir County.

The projects will focus primarily on mainstreaming Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Ending Drought Emergencies (EDE), Gender, Climate Change, Environment and HIV/AIDS within the Medium Term Plans (MTPs) 2018-2022 anchored on Vision 2030.

While availability of clean and safe portable water poses a challenge in the expansive county, the governor pledged to ensure sustainable access.

“My Government has engaged the National Government in collaboration with Donors to support major infrastructure water projects in the County with three key objectively, namely; supply of water for human and livestock consumption, increase acreage of arable land under irrigation agriculture and enhance fish farming as an alternative livelihood option.” he said

He also pointed out the need to expand and undertake afforestation programmes in all sub counties and Wards, even as he thanked the World Food Programme (WFP) for their strong partnership.

The consultative forum in Nairobi and the validation forum slated on 14 and 15th February 2018 in Wajir is funded and facilitated by WFP.
