Wajir North MP Ahmed Ibrahim escapes unhurt after attack on census convoy

Wajir North MP Ahmed Ibrahim escaped unhurt after unidentified gunmen ambushed a census convoy in Masalale area on Thursday night.

Reports indicate that the vehicle was torched but there were no injuries.

The Wajir MP was travelling with the census staff for the pre-listing exercise.

The group had just arrived in the area when they heard sound of gunshots rent the air forcing them to flee.

Masalale North, which is on the border of Wajir North and Eldas Constituency, is a contested area with recurring clashes over boundary disputes.

Two days ago, displaced communities living in the area demonstrated in Buna demanding that the government rescind an order to have them relocate.

They had been ordered to return to their original homes until the census is concluded.

According to them, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) officers can enumerate them at their current location.

Wajir County Commissioner Koyfird Kibara held a meeting with the group but has not been forthcoming with the details.

Tension remains high in Masalale even as the country gears up for the census that is to kick off starting Saturday, August 24 to 31.
