Wajir schools to delay re-opening over cholera

As the rest of the country prepares to commence learning for the final term of the year, students in Wajir County will have to wait another 5 days before schools can open their gates for learning following a month long cholera outbreak.

The county health department will be conducting inspections in all 42 private and public schools to ensure health standards are adhered to before students can resume school.

“We are going round on Thursday and Friday to see which schools have basic things like toilets, hand washing facilities, how is the kitchen, are the people providing food examined, etc,” said Abdinur Haji Mohammed, the County Executive for public health and sanitation in Wajir

The cholera outbreak is reported to have killed 11 people so far, with over 300 others treated.

“We will allow schools to open up after we accomplish the inspection. However, we will be going round and any school that doesn’t meet the public health standards will be dealt with. We will not compromise the health of our children.”

This comes even as the health workers strike in Nyeri County went on, with nurses in Kirinyaga County also joining the bandwagon despite assertions from the chair of the Council of Governors Peter Munya that the strikes had been quelled.

“I want to announce that even Nyeri all the workers are going back,” said Munya.

Following the strike in Kirinyaga, one person was reported dead at the Kerugoya Hospital.

Munya accuses the Health Secretary James Macharia of instigating the strikes using the health workers’ union.

“Is he a promoter of trade unionist? Does he sit on the trade unions board? Why is he giving them comfort? The unions are making statements from NHIF meetings sponsored by the national government.”

Munya says plans to revert the health function back to the national government are unacceptable and will not succeed.
