Watch out for fake antivenom drugs, warns government

The Pharmacy and Poisons Board has warned against falsified and unregistered antivenom drugs that are circulating in the market.

The board has listed two drugs; Puff Udder and Ant Venom while asking members of the public, health workers, chemists and pharmacies to be vigilant.

Puff Udder, which has a manufacturing date of 09-2015 has a shelf life of seven years while Ant Venom, according to the board, has no manufacturing, dosage and instruction for use.

Antivenom is usually free or costs Ksh.600 to Ksh.1,000 in public hospitals while in private institutions it goes for Ksh.16,000 to Ksh.30,000.

The issue of snake bites became a matter of concern to World Health Organisation (WHO) member states and the Kenyan government channels funds for the treatment of snake venom victims.
