The Water Resource Authority (WRA) on Friday announced a forthcoming disconnection of water supply in major towns in Kenya following a Ksh.5.7 billion bill.

According to the water authority, major towns that will be affected include Nairobi, Kisumu, Nakuru, Mombasa among others.

Speaking to journalists soon after the closure of a 4-day workshop in Machakos County, WRA Chairman Joe Mutambu lamented how the accrued bill had affected operations at the authority.

Some of the notorious defaulters mentioned were Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company, Coast Water Services, and Muranga Water Services.

Mr. Mutambu further announced the authority’s plan to introduce ‘Smart meters’ to their consumers which he said would accurately determine water abstractions by all water users

” They will be capable of measuring water abstracted and transmit data in real-time,” siad Mutambu.

In Kenya, Kenya Power adopted the use of smart meters in the year 2014.
