Water shortage in Migori enters week two

The water crisis in Migori County entered the second week on Tuesday, November 22 with residents accusing the county’s department of water of failing to act with speed and ensure the problem has been solved.

The residents have now threatened to take to the streets if the water distribution is not resolved within the shortest time possible.

The County Executive Committee member in charge of water services had on last week promised to have the problem resolved by Friday, November 18 but this has not been done so far.

In an interview with Radio Ramogi on Tuesday, November 22, the CEC, Mrs. Isca Aluoch, said that the water shortage in the area was a temporary problem, saying that the county was working round the clock to ensure re-distribution of the precious commodity.

She further noted that the water shortage was as a result of power disconnection by Kenya Power over unpaid bills amounting to Ksh 1 million.

Health facilities in county are among key installations affected by the water shortage with patients being forced to forgo bathing while residents walk for tens of kilometers to fetch water from neighbouring rivers, which they say is not fit for human consumption.

The shortage comes barely two months after a similar one hit the county over outstanding power bills.
