Wazir Chacha freed on Ksh.1M cash bail

Wazir Benson Chacha, the man accused of defrauding Members of Parliament has been released by a Nairobi Court after spending nearly a month in police custody.

Nairobi Chief Magistrate Roselyne Oganyo released Mr. Chacha on a Ksh.1 million cash bail or Ksh.3 million surety bond.

When the accused was arraigned in court on April 2, the prosecution submitted that Mr. Chacha was a flight risk hence asked the court to deny him bail.

Magistrate Oganyo, however, dismissed the prosecution’s argument adding that before the suspect was arrested in Tarime, Tanzania he was leaving with his half-brother in Donholm, Nairobi.

On April 2,  Chacha was charged with six counts among them conspiracy to defraud, obtaining registration by false pretense and impersonation, all of which he denied.

He was charged with conspiracy to defraud public officers and the general public by registering a mobile number in the name of Murang’a County Woman Representative Sabina Chege. He is alleged to have committed the offence on March 3, 2018 at Update beauty shop in Nairobi jointly with others not before court.

Chacha is alleged to have obtained Ksh.20,000 from former Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo purporting that he was Sabina Chege.

In addition, the accused is said to have attempted to obtain Ksh.100,000 from Mr. Midiwo under the pretense that he was the Murang’a Woman Rep.

Chacha was arrested on April 1 in Tarime, Tanzania while allegedly trying to flee to the Democratic Republic of Congo after learning that he was being sought by police.
