Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha says journalists will not be allowed into schools to assess the state of COVID-19 preparedness in learning institutions without express authority from the Ministry.

According to Prof. Magoha, nobody including parents or even the clergy will be allowed into schools since the national examinations period is around the corner.

The CS, speaking during a media briefing on Wednesday, said journalists will only be allowed into schools in the company of Ministry officials.

“Who has singled out the media? We have said nobody goes to schools including parents or even archbishops. So why do you think you are special to go to schools,” said the tough-talking CS.

“When we are going there (schools) we kindly ask you to follow us… you will have to forgive me I don’t trust anybody as far as examinations are concerned.”

He insisted that the government is not hiding anything by barring the media from accessing schools, even as claims emerge that some schools have not put in place safety measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in learning institutions.

“Let us not fight about this, it is in good faith. It is not for any other reason. We are not hiding anything. We are an open and democratic country… Why do you want to make my work difficult,” he said.

In 2016, then Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i  barred parents from attending school functions, including prayer days during the third term as part of measures aimed at curbing cheating.

Parents and guardians were blamed for passing mobile phones to KCSE candidates during prayer sessions with the purpose of aiding them in cheating.
