We are sorry for failing to secure IEBC officials Govt

Government spokesperson, Eric Kiraithe, has said that the government is sorry for not having provided enough security to Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials before the murder of the commission’s ICT director, Chris Msando, who was found dead in Kikuyu, Kiambu County on Saturday, July 31.

Speaking at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi, Kiraithe said that the state regrets not having provided enough security to the commission’s officials beforehand.

“The government apologizes for failing to provide enough security to IEBC, but as from now proper measures have been put in place and they all will be secured,” Kiraithe said.

Kiraithe also re-assured Kenyans of their safety during the poll period urging them not to migrate from their residences noting that the government has secured all parts of the country in the build up to the election.

“No one should migrate from their respective areas of residence because of security reasons, the government has put in place necessary measures to secure the country,” Kiraithe said.

He added that the government appreciates the support offered by America’s Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and Britain’s Scotland Yard in the ongoing investigations into the death of Mr. Msando.

On Tuesday, July 1, the FBI and Britain’s Scotland Yard offered to help by helping the government unmask Msando’s killers.

Kiraithe also called on all media houses to vet the content that they put on air to avoid a re-occurrence of relaying of information that is not factual to the public as it happened on Wednesday, July 1 when Kisumu Senator, Prof. Anyang Nyong’o, called a press conference on Wednesday, July 1 and alleged that Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) spokesperson Col. Joseph Owouth was missing.

“We ask all media houses to air sensible content during this critical moment, try to verify information to avoid a situation like yesterday’s that was just meant to create confusion,” Kiraithe said.
