We cant fix Nairobi roads with the current weather, says Sonko

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko now says the county’s poor roads cannot be fixed during this rainy season.

Speaking during the Labour Day celebrations at Uhuru Park on Tuesday, Sonko said in order to repair the dilapidated roads one had to first fix a number of issues, among them the drainage system around the city.

The governor appealed to city stakeholders and residents to come together and assist him in coming up with solutions to Nairobi’s major problems.

“I know there is a drainage problem in Nairobi… there is also a road problem in Nairobi… but you can see the current weather… We cannot build roads on top of sewage, we cannot build roads without fixing drainage in Nairobi. Unless we want to waste public funds,” said Sonko.

“Therefore, I would like all Kenyans, workers of Nairobi City County, all organizations, all stakeholders, to come together so that we can figure out how to fix Nairobi’s problems.”

The county boss, who has recently come under fire over poor performance since he took office, further urged people to drop the blame game saying, “Nairobi is not for Sonko alone.”

On Sunday, Sonko, who had promised sweeping changes in the management of Nairobi within 100 days of office, said cartels that took root during his predecessor Evans Kidero’s reign have made his work too difficult.

He said he will need another 100 days to set things right.
