We do not recognise Waigurus blessing- Kirinyaga Elders

A section of elders from Kirinyaga County have strongly condemned the endorsement of former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru as a Kirinyaga County leader.

The elders, who are members of the Kikuyu Council of Elders, say the political endorsement was done without their knowledge, adding that the elders who carried out the ceremony are not bona fide members of the Council.

The Council’s Chairman, Cyrus Githaka, has asked Waiguru to visit them to formally receive the council’s blessing as she plans to vie for political office in the upcoming General Election.

“We usually do these blessings at a specific holy place Riagitugu. The elders slaughter a goat and sheep. If the ceremony was done in a different manner, we say that it was an individual thing. We were not involved in anyway,” said Githaka.

On Friday, in an elaborate ceremony held in Kutus town, Benson Njege led a section of elders in blessing Waiguruin accordance with Kikuyu culture. The elders went further to declare their support for the former CS as she throws her hat in the ring for the Kirinyaga gubernatorial seat.

Speaking to the media, Waiguru said that she was elated by the elders’ action, adding that their endorsement was important to her.

The former CS underwent the Kikuyu traditional rite where she was dressed in a special cloth known as “Thitu” reserved for selected Kikuyu women leaders.
