We were caught unaware, Sossion on KCPE results release

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General, Wilson Sossion, has credited the Ministry of Education and the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) for reforming the education sector.

Sossion, while addressing Citizen TV at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) on Thursday, December 1, said that the Education Cabinet Secretary, Dr Fred Matiang’i, had achieved a lot in instilling confidence in the stakeholders.

The KNUT Secretary General said that the supervision of this year’s examinations was beyond expectations saying that there were no cases of malpractices witnessed during the whole period.

He said that the reforms have given hope to the teachers, parents, pupils and other stakeholders, adding that it will ensure equality among all students.

The administration of this year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) was carried out by three ministries; Ministry of Education, Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of ICT.

And defying the traditions, the Ministry of Education also banned the use of geometrical sets and effectively replaced them with transparent bags as a way of curbing cheating.

The Education CS also banned the use of Mathematical Tables, Atlas and other materials in examinations.

Sossion has, however, faulted the Education CS over what he termed as ambushing the stakeholders in releasing the KCPE results.

He said that nobody was aware that the results would be released Thursday, December 1.

His sentiments were echoed by the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) chairman, Omboko Milemba, who said that the Ministry ought to have done a proper communication.

He, however, praised the Ministry for making reforms in the Ministry that have restored the confidence of stakeholders in the education sector.
