We will nullify irregular degrees Matiangi

Education Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i has reiterated the government’s commitment to sanitize the education sector in the country.

Speaking at a thanksgiving ceremony in Makini School, Nairobi on Sunday, the education CS said that his ministry would not hesitate in nullifying university degrees conferred on dubious grounds.

Matiang’i said it is ‘shameful’ for political leaders to forge their academic qualifications for the purpose of qualifying for particular elective posts.

“It is shameful to find people in public leadership, they know them and their God, because God sees through us, that they sat in any one’s University classroom. They know they did not qualify for University in the first place and they know to qualify for that office you need a degree, so (they) cook the papers,” said Matiang’i.

Most politicians have already enrolled in a university degree programme or recently graduated in a rush to meet a constitutional clause requiring them to possess a degree for certain political positions.

The Commission for University Education (CUE) has already embarked on a university degrees auditing exercising aiming to strike out degrees awarded to persons who do not meet the basic university entry requirement of a C+ in KCSE or a three-year diploma offered by Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

The education CS has received a lot of goodwill from Kenyans in his efforts to streamline the education sector, which many considered to be in dire situation owing to massive examination cheating and irregular awarding of university degrees.

Matiang’i oversaw the 2016 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), which many considered credible, devoid of irregularities.
