We’ll always be there for you – Gov’t to journalists on World Press Freedom Day

The government is committed to press freedom in the country as well as protecting journalists in their daily undertakings, ICT Cabinet Secretary, Joe Mucheru, now says.

Speaking during the World Press Freedom Day celebrations at Nairobi’s Intercontinental Hotel, the CS said that a journalist’s safety while executing their duties is not a choice, while urging media owners to help the government by playing a critical role in ensuring their well being.

“I condemn the cases of mysterious killings and harassment of members of the press, it is unacceptable,” said the CS.

Mucheru, however, advised the media to focus on informing the public on development matters and to lead from the forefront in preaching for a peaceful August 8, 2017 General Election.

Editor’s Guild Chairperson, Nation Media Group’s Linus Kaikai, lamented on the growing vice of fake news that is affecting the credibility of journalists and the media industry at large, urging the media fraternity to improve their game when it comes to informing the public with the vital and true information.

Kaikai commended the media in the manner they covered the just concluded party primaries.

“The media has done a recommendable job in covering the nominations, this shows that we have a robust media as a country,” said Mr. Kaikai.

This year’s World Press Freedom Day theme was: Critical Minds for Critical Times: Media’s role in advancing peaceful, just and inclusive society.
