Were not willing to donate the presidency, Raila loyalists say

The selection of the Opposition presidential candidate is causing jitters within the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD), with the prolonged process of settling on a flag bearer drawing varied reactions from members.

A technical team of six mediating on the pair that will face off with President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017 is working on possibilities of roping in Amani National Congress Party Leader Musalia Mudavadi as the possible Opposition presidential candidate with Raila Odinga as kingmaker.

A section of coalition loyalists are, however, opposed to the coronation of Mudavadi as the Opposition presidential candidate, holding that Raila should remain as their candidate for the 2017 presidential contest.

“The Luo people are not willing to donate the presidency to anybody else. Raila Amollo Odinga has been our candidate and that shall remains that,” said Homa Bay Senator, Moses Kajwang.

“Mudavadi akija aingie na mlango wa nyuma, there is a queue,” said Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar

But despite these contestations, insiders in Opposition camp indicate the process of roping in Mudavadi into CORD is near completion.

This comes as Budalang’i MP Ababu Namwamba hinted to possibilities of working with the CORD coalition, despite having broken ranks with the Opposition leadership, insisting that the only constant factor is he will not go back into ODM.
