Western Region Leads in Gender Based Violence

The rate of physical violence against women in Western Kenya stands at 51.6 per cent followed by Nyanza at 49.5 per cent while Nairobi comes third at 46.1.

Western also leads in physical violence against men at 12.8 per cent followed by Nairobi at 12.2 and Nyanza at 10.3 per cent.

Rift Valley, Coast region and North Eastern have the lowest numbers at 32.4, 27.4 and 12.2 per cent respectively.

In general, the data show that women are more likely to experience physical violence committed by their spouse or partner than men and that sexual violence committed by a spouse or partner is not as prevalent as physical violence.

 

Sexual violence committed by spouses

The data also shows that 38 per cent of ever-married women age 15-49 have ever experienced physical violence committed by their husband or partner, while 23 per cent experienced violence in the 12 months prior to the survey.

Nine per cent of ever-married men age 15-49 have ever experienced physical violence committed by their wife or partner, while 5 per cent experienced violence in the 12 months prior to the survey.

About 14 per cent of women and 4 per cent of men have ever experienced sexual violence committed by a spouse or partner, while 10 per cent of women and 3 per cent of men experienced sexual violence by a spouse or partner in the past 12 months.

The report also indicates that North Eastern region has the highest at 6.4 per cent followed by Western region at 4.7, Rift Valley at 4.5, and Coast and Nyanza both at 4.3. Others are Eastern 3.4, Central 2.8 and Nairobi at 2.7.
