Wetangula spotted in Hong Kong as probe on fake gold saga hots up

Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula was on Tuesday spotted in Hong Kong with his nominated counterpart Isaac Mwaura.

Wetangula is yet to speak out over his alleged ties to the saga that has left tongues wagging with a picture of him in Hong Kong being the only interaction, albeit indirectly, with social media.

“With Sen Moses Wetangula representing the Senate ahead of the International Anti corruption conference in Hong Kong China. We paid a courtesy call at the Faculty of Law of University of Hong Kong where Prof Yash Pal Ghai taught for 10 years,” Senator Mwaura posted on his social media pages alongside the photo of the two of them.

The last time Wetangula posted on social media was on May 17 in response to former Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale’s decision to defect from Ford Kenya party to Jubilee.

“My 1st deputy PL Dr Bonny Khalwale has made his democratic decision and choice to leave Ford Kenya. It is his constitutional right to associate with persons of his choice. Ford Kenya wishes him well in his new political trajectory. FK remains solid!!” the Ford Kenya party leader said.

Wetangula’s name hit the headlines four days ago after an audio conversation with an audibly angry businessman over an alleged gold consignment emerged.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti later revealed that the authenticity of the audio was under investigation.

He further told Citizen TV that his is team is also conducting a forensic trail touching on all suspected criminals within and outside the country, noting that the latest scandal involves an intricate network of cartels, some within government.

“The syndicate involves high and mighty across the world. But rest assured, I will nail each and every criminal involved in this fake gold scandal,” he said on Sunday.

It is expected that once Wetangula jets back into the country, he will be summoned to shed light on what he knows about the gold consignment that was to allegedly pass through Kenya to Dubai.

At the centre of the saga is gold said to be valued at Ksh.30billion that was reportedly from the Republic of Congo.

It was allegedly to be transported to the United Arab Emirates through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi.

Zaheer Jhanda, a former politician, recently spoke out over his links to the royal family in Dubai.

He is said to have consulted with a Dubai-based gold merchant who was supposed to ferry the gold.

Jhanda is however yet to write a statement at the DCI headquarters.
