WFP Launches Food Aid Project In South Sudan

The three month projection aims at giving food to the dispalced people and special nutrition for new mothers and children who are viewed to be most at risk.

The program targets about 400,000 internally displaced persons.

So far, the battle between South Sudan’s government and rebels has worsened the situation in a country that has had problems with food security, during a time that would have been a harvest season.

WFP fears that even if the negotiations between the government and the rebels are successful, South Sudan’s food security will remain adversly affected.

Humanitarian agencies are finding it hard to effectively conduct their operations with the ongoing war.

So far, WFP estimates that 10% of its food prepositioned in different locations in the country has been looted.

The allegedly looted food is enough to feed 180,000 people for a month.

WFP Deputy Country Director Eddie Rowe called upon all parties to protect civillians and safeguard human assets such as food.

The relief operations are also facing the challenge of inacessible roads.

WFP is also extending assistance to victims who have taken refuge in neighbouring countries.
