Where is Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko?

Where is Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko?

Nairobi is still reeling from the aftermath of corruption claims against officials, protests in the County Assembly and a school tragedy as Mike Sonko remains ‘missing’.

In the last two weeks, Sonko has visited several countries abroad including Dubai, Italy and France among others.

His regular social media posts about county operations have recently been replaced with clips of him having fun abroad.

At Eliud Kipchoge’s pre Party. Na wale wakikosa news kama NTV jana ati mimi ni wamadrama. I’m asking wapi Katiba ilisema Governor wasijivinjari? Kwani nilikua nadance naked? Wasiniletee banaa. Wale wamasuti wavae hata usiku,” he said chiding his critics.

He continued: “Niko majuu but 411 ya Nairobi naipata tuu. A plane has just crashed next to the bypass just near Nairobi National park, praying that hakuna casualties.”

Another post reads: “Mayouths from 15yrs to 18yrs musiskize hio mafitina, God willing you will be voters by 2022. Tujienjoy when still alive but kuna limits remember to concentrate on what builds you, and may God help us all succeed,” he continued.

The Governor later said he is away on official duty.

Speaking to Citizen TV, the Governor said one of his trips was to Milan to receive a global award after Nairobi was recognized as the one of the fastest growing cities in the world.

Back in Kenya, county workers took to the streets on Monday to protest over delayed salaries. Police were forced to lobe teargas canisters to disperse the irate crowd.

Reports in local media alleged that Sonko was yet to sign the Appropriation Bill.

Meanwhile, a crisis looms in Nairobi City County should governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko find himself behind bars and barred from accessing his office.

This follows a Ksh.5.8 billion alleged tax debt that could lead to prosecution of key county officials.

The controversial garbage tenders linked to an alleged Ksh. 20 million deposit in his account has also stirred trouble.

Sonko leads a county without a Deputy Governor and with an embattled County Assembly Speaker who has not steered operations for over a year now.

Governor Sonko has been without a deputy for 19 months now.

Should Governor Sonko be barred from accessing his office before nominating a deputy and having the candidate approved by the assembly for formal appointment, questions would arise over the Speaker taking over in acting capacity.

Nairobi Speaker Beatrice Elachi, who was ousted from office on September 6 last year, made a forceful return to office last week which resulted in chaos.

Even though the Employment and Labour Relations Court reinstated her in May, she has not presided over a sitting at the County Assembly.

Sources close to Citizen Digital however reveal that a section of MCAs are planning to eject her once again.
