Who shot my son? Kamukunji man devastated as bullet still lodged in boys head

10-year-old Destiny Mumo is fighting for his life at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH): he has a bullet lodged in his head.

His health becoming a source of emotional torture for his father Jacob Gathumbi who says he lacks answers for his inquisitive two daughters who keep on asking about the whereabouts of their brother.

“Amekuwa paralysed penye risasi iko iko katikati ya ubongo penye iko imekata macho; macho imegeuka…nilikuwa nimeweka matumaini yangu kwake…yote ndani ya maisha yangu, na kuona maisha yake inakwisha hata heri mimi nife…..,” Gathumbi told Citizen TV.

Up until 4pm on Friday last week, Destiny was a boy full of energy, having fun with his age mates just outside their classrooms at the Neci Educational Centre.

However, riots that broke out about two kilometres from where he was located saw his life take a different turn.

“We saw him falling down, so akajaribu kujiamsha yeye mwenyewe, so akaendelea ku-walk, ju kuna teachers who sit here so akafika pale akaanguka chini,” his teacher Lameck Omariba said.

According to him, Destiny was bleeding from his ears when they got to where he had fallen down.

“Kuna mawe hapa ukiangalia, so nikadhani amegongwa na mawe, ju hata ile statement nilipeana kwa nurses, ni that alianguka …..akagongwa na mawe,” he said.

Nurses at the clinic where he was rushed to redirected them to KNH, insisting that Destiny’s case was critical.

Doctors at the KNH emergency unit revealed that his injury was not an ordinary one: he had a bullet lodged in his head.

“Kuona anakufa kwa risasi ju zinarushwa kiholela, hazijulikani vile zinakuja ju the whole day, pande ya Kamukunji zilikuwa zinakuja kwa hewa, wengi waliumia ju wengi walikuja hata kwa ward penye mtoto alikuwa pia kuna mwingine alikuja akiwa ana risasi kwenye mguu,” his father said.

He has since made an official complaint at the Pangani Police Station, awaiting to record a statement as well at the Kamukunji Police Station.

Kamukunji was thrust into chaos on Friday and residents claim that a police officer shot a man leading to a confrontation between them and the police officers.

When the crowd continued to build up, the locals say that the police officers shot into the air.
