Why DCI Kinoti believes DP Ruto office guard Kenei was murdered in cold blood

Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti believes the late Sergeant Kipyegon Kenei, who was attached at Deputy President William Ruto’s office, was killed in cold blood.

The country’s top detective says investigations have so far revealed that Kenei was killed “simply to safeguard, protect and insulate the source” of the Ksh.39 billion fake military equipment tender that is linked to former Sports CS Rashid Echesa.

“…the motive of the cold murder is very clear. It was simply to safeguard, protect, insulate and or save the source from the adverse involvement and attendance consequences using the country military procurement process in the most deceitful and fraudulent manner,” says Kinoti in brief on the ongoing probe.

On Thursday, Kinoti publicly released CCTV footage that suggested Kenei was involved in the scam and a graphical image illustrating a forensic examination of the crime scene showing why it is not in doubt that the late sergeant was murdered.

According to the forensic examination, the position in which Kenei was found lying dead, blood spatter, bullet trajectory and location of the cartridge, all rule out the possibility of suicide.

Detectives say Kenei was found on the floor lying partly on his side with his face down and apart from the gunshot, he had no other body injuries, as the autopsy revealed.

If he had shot himself and fallen on the ground as purported, Kinoti says Kenei, who was tall in size, would have fallen with a thud and most likely sustained injuries.

The DCI further says that considering Kenei’s height, had he shot himself in his bedsitter house at Imara Daima, he would have fallen on the bed and not on the floor as he was found. Furthermore, his bed was neatly made with no sign whatsoever of any disturbance, adds the DCI.

Kinoti further maintains that if indeed Kenei shot himself, blood spatter and a bullet hole would have been spotted at a certain angle on the ceiling of the house. According to the DCI, there were no blood spatter marks on the ceiling or wall.

On his hands, Kinoti says Kenei did not have any blood spots or gunpowder residue and also blood stains were on the side of the bed sheet but not on the pyjama.

“Blood normally spurts out of a fresh, deep wound due to pressure,” says Kinoti.

According to Kinoti, the position in which Kenei’s feet were found and his open right hand were inconsistent with an individual who has just shot himself and fallen.

“Self inflicted gunshot victims’ hands commonly retain the firing position even after death. Gun travels with him, along with cartridge, all the way down,” notes Kinoti. The catridge collected from the house was lodged in the upper pyjamas that Kenei was wearing.

The phone of the deceased police officer was found with no sim card and the suicide note left behind could not be matched with his handwriting.
