Wilson Airport potholes draw huge criticism online

Kenyans took to Twitter to express their dismay at the poor state of roads at the Wilson Airport.

Pictures doing rounds on social media showed huge potholes filled with water after the heavy rains.

Some wondered how planes operating at the region’s busiest airport use such a runway while others blasted the Government for seemingly ‘turning a blind eye’.

According to the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) website, Wilson is one of the busiest airports in East and Central Africa in terms of aircraft movement.

“Domestic flights constitute 90 percent of the total flights from the Airport with international flights accounting for 10 per cent,” it says.

The website indicates that the airport serves tourist destinations such as Maasai Mara, Mombasa, Amboseli, Lamu, Kilimanjaro Diani, Lokichogio and Nanyuki.

“It is also a modern hub of General Aviation in East and Central Africa,” the KAA website reads.

Below are some of the comments from a section of irate Kenyans:

“Why would you look the other way about Wilson Airport. Are you waiting for a mishap? I use Wilson every week. The potholes and the messy arrival is not helping such a busy airport serving the region and flights to our national parks. These are bad scenes,” Mohammed Hersi, Chairman of the Kenya Tourism Foundation, lamented on Twitter.

Shaffie Weru, a top radio-show host, posed: “Lakini Kenya yawa. Where did we go wrong???? How can Wilson Airport have potholes?”

“Wilson Airport taxi-way is full of potholes! Where do airport taxes go to? Is it for @KeNHAKenya ? Come on? Africa’s busiest airport ? This is embarrassing to say the least,” one Jackie Arkle said.
