Woman arrested for impersonating Sonko, swindling millions from Kenyans

A 34-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with a syndicate that has been using social media platforms to swindle Kenyans out of millions of shillings.

Christine Onyango Adhiambo is part of a syndicate that has been impersonating Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko using fake social media accounts to dupe unsuspecting victims.

Governor Sonko has since come out to caution his supporters against falling prey to the fraudsters.

“Many Kenyans have been conned by online fraudsters who have been using my name to commit fraud through fake Facebook accounts,” said Sonko.

He said his Facebook account has been verified and has over 1.8 million followers.

“I’m happy to note security agencies have today to arrested a couple of suspects in Nairobi’s Umoja estate.

“Any member of the public who has fallen prey to such fraudsters should report the cases to DCI, EACC or any other authority,” said Sonko.

A lady only as Lilian said she has been conned out of more than Ksh.20,000.

“They told us to form groups of 15 people each and register a group. They then said after all the registration process, we would be getting a grant of Ksh.100,000, a house and a car for a successful group,” narrated Lilian.

She says they were then asked to contribute Ksh.15,000 for administration and registration of the group.

“We were brainwashed by this idea. They told us that residents in Kayole, Dandora, Githurai, Korogocho have benefitted,” added Lilian.

Buru Buru CID boss Aden Guyo said they are working on breaking the syndicate.

He said Christine has already provided crucial information that will lead to the arrest of her cohorts.

“This is going to be a breakthrough. I can assure all those who have been swindled huge amounts of money that their amount will be recovered,” said the CID chief.

He said Christine will soon be arraigned in court.

She is currently being detained at Buruburu police station under OB number 71/20/6/2019.

Guyo further cautioned Kenyans against online fraudsters who are using specialized applications to swindle money from unsuspecting Kenyans.
