Woman bleeds to death after delivery at hospital in Machakos County

Dozens of residents in Tala, Machakos County on Sunday held demonstrations following the death of a 34-year-old mother who bled to death while delivering a baby at a private hospital.

The locals stormed Ruai Family Hospital led by relatives of the deceased, 34-year-old Eunice Nzula, who was pronounced dead on arrival at Kangundo Level 4 Hospital where she was taken three hours after heavy bleeding.

Her husband, Reuben Ngei, claimed medical staff at the facility turned down his pleas to refer his wife to another hospital but insisted on holding her further even as she continued bleeding after giving birth.

He said the life of his wife would have been saved if she had been referred to a government facility which has better equipment.

However, the hospital through its administrator, Peter Okoth defended the incident, saying the patient could not be referred at a time when she.was experiencing active bleeding.

He said medical personnel handling the patient did the best they could in the circumstances to save the woman’s life.

Speaking separately, Machakos Deputy Governor Eng. Francis Maliti and area MP Stephen Mule have condemned the incident saying that investigation should be launched immediately on the same.

The matter has since been reported at Tala Police Post and is under investigation.
